IMG_2696 is counting down the Top 10 Olivet High School sports stories for 2016-17. Here is No. 7…

In a relatively short period of time, the Olivet High School volleyball program has gone from a ho-hum existence to one that generates high expectations.

During the 2016 season, for example, the Eagles posted their third straight 20-win season, finished second behind state-power Lakewood in the Greater Lansing Activities Conference for the third time in as many years, and three-peated as Class B district champions.

Olivet won three matches en route to the district championship, knocking off Stockbridge on November 1 and Jackson Northwest two days later. The contest against Northwest went five sets, with the Eagles coming from behind after dropping two of the first three.

In the district final on November 4, Olivet defeated host Eaton Rapids, 25-22, 25-13, 25-15, in a dominating performance. While the Eagles’ season ended four days later following a regional semifinal loss to nemesis Lakewood, it did not take away from what they had accomplished.

“I am very proud of how the team stepped up to win districts,” first-year coach Kelly Fedewa said. “They played well under pressure and were determined to get a district title…This was a goal that the team had set during the first week of practice.”

Olivet’s talented roster included three All-GLAC first-team players — senior Taylor Sinclair, senior Karli Corey and junior Bailey Hoffman.
