In just his first year of high school wrestling, Olivet sophomore Parker Smith is one step away from a berth in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Individual State Finals.
Smith put himself in position to reach the prestigious event when he placed first in the 160-pound division at Saturday’s MHSAA Individual District at Michigan Center High School. He now advances to the regional competition at Williamston High School on Saturday, February 20.
The district title included three impressive victories — 12-0 over Jordyn Eley of Jonesville, 10-7 over Jared Lambrix of Flat Rock, and 2-0 over Kyle Reinhart of Dundee. By sweeping through the tournament, Smith improved his season record to 32-6.
Joining Smith at the regional meet will be teammate Carson Hartman, who finished third at 103 pounds this past weekend. After losing his first match to eventual runner-up Brandon Wireman of Ida, Hartman (29-10) pinned Jensen Ballinger of Jonesville in 1:10 and dominated top-seeded Jeremy Bradley of Jackson Lumen Christi, 12-2.
