The Olivet High School girls’ cross country team took a giant step toward its goal of a Greater Lansing Activities Conference title Tuesday — and the Eagles did it without one of their top runners.
The locals placed first in the GLAC jamboree at Stockbridge High School, totaling 25 position points compared to 34 for runner-up Leslie. Five Olivet runners finished in the top eight, and that was accomplished without the services of injured senior Teona Feldpausch.
Morgan Greenman led the Eagles with a second-place time of 20:30, while Leslie standout Rachel Wiltsie crossed the line first in 19:29. Other Olivet scorers were Autumn Wietzke, third in 20:39; Kaylee Richardson, fifth in 20:54; Miranda Barnes, seventh in 21:09; and Hazel Anderson, eighth in 21:10.
The Eagles placed five more runners in the top 30 — Kay Morton (20th), Grace Mott (21st), Chloe Faulkner (24th), Cayley Wilfong (25th) and Kelsie Letts (28th). The race consisted of 64 participants.
Olivet can win an outright GLAC title on October 22 at Maple Valley if it places first in the league meet. If the Eagles finish second behind Leslie, they will share the championship with the Blackhawks.
BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY — Olivet nabbed runner-up honors at Tuesday’s GLAC jamboree with 73 position points, compared to 24 for host Stockbridge.
The Eagles’ top runners were Isaac Waffle, sixth in 17:02; Colton Graves, 12th in 17:48; Sam Smith, 14th in 18:01; Joel Fudge, 19th in 18:23; Colin McDowell, 18th in 18:58; Nate Zona, 25th in 19:00; Andrew Nelson, 26th in 19:01; Andrew Wietzke, 27th in 19:04; and Devin Feldpausch, 28th in 19:05. The race included 70 competitors.
