Don’t look now, but the most exciting week of the year in Michigan prep sports is upon us.
That distinction is annually reserved for the first week in June. This is when girls’ soccer, baseball and softball district tournaments collide with boys’ golf regional events and the track & field state finals.
All six Olivet High School spring teams will be in action this week, starting with the varsity girls’ soccer team’s first-round district match against Delton Kellogg on Tuesday, May 30 at Olivet High School. Game time is 7:00 PM. The Lady Eagles enter the post-season with a 10-6-2 overall record and a third-place finish in the Greater Lansing Activities Conference.
The varsity baseball squad (21-9-1 overall; 2nd in the GLAC) will conclude its regular season on Tuesday with a non-league home doubleheader against Bath at 4:00 PM. That will serve as a tune-up for its district semifinal contest against Coldwater on Saturday, June 3 at Coldwater High School. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 noon.
The varsity softball team (25-12; GLAC co-champions) travels to Climax-Scotts for a single game on Wednesday, May 31 prior to playing host Coldwater in a district semifinal Saturday at 10:00 AM.
Olivet’s varsity boys’ golf unit will compete in an MHSAA Division 3 regional at Stonehedge North Golf Course in Augusta on Wednesday, May 31 at 8:30 AM. A top-three finish would advance the Eagles, which finished second in the GLAC this spring, to the state finals June 9-10 in Big Rapids.
The OHS track & field teams, who both clinched GLAC titles last week, competed in their regional meets on May 19. Seven athletes — Miranda Barnes, Colin Grady, Bailey Hoffman, Logan Kyre, Noelle Rohde, Taylor Sinclair and Autumn Wietzke — qualified for the MHSAA Division 2 State Finals on Saturday, June 3 in Zeeland.
