Two Olivet High School runners, junior Isaac Waffle and senior Joel Fudge, have qualified for the Michigan High School Cross Country Championships on Saturday, November 4 at Michigan International Speedway.
Waffle punched his ticket with a 10th-place finish at yesterday’s Division 2 regional competition at Portage Central, crossing the line in 17:00.4. Fudge placed 13th in 17:07.8. The top 15 runners from the field of 101 (15 schools) advanced to the state meet.
The Division 2 boys’ race is scheduled to start at 2:50 PM next Saturday. Tickets for the event cost $8 and spectators are encouraged to arrive early.
As a team, the Olivet boys finished seventh with 152 position points, compared to 103 for champion Parma Western and 108 for Marshall. Sam Smith placed 27th for the Eagles, while Devin Feldpausch was 47th and Colin McDowell 55th.
The Olivet girls came in eighth out of 14 teams with 191 points. Otsego ran away with the team title, compiling an eye-opening 50 points, while Western was runner-up with 63.
Sophomore Autumn Wietzke posted the Eagles’ fastest time, touring the 5K course in 20:26.0 — good for 16th place but five seconds behind the final state qualifier. Danae Feldpausch was 26th, Hazel Anderson 30th, Kay Morton 58th and Ally Platzer 61st.
